If you have epilepsy or have had a seizure, there are laws and regulations that govern whether you meet the health requirements for a driving license. To assess whether you meet the health requirements, an assessment of your medical history and completed examination will be carried out. There may be a need to perform a long-term EEG recording.

About Epilepsy and Driving

As a driver, you are responsible for ensuring that you meet the requirements for traffic safety. Epileptic seizures while driving can have serious consequences because attention is reduced and reaction time is longer. Therefore, if you have epilepsy or have had a seizure, there are laws and regulations that govern whether you meet the health requirements for a driving license.

EEG can record changes in the brain's electrical activity, such as epileptic activity/seizures, and can often say something about the likelihood of you having more epileptic seizures.

Before

Arrive with freshly washed hair without styling products. Remember to bring a hairbrush or comb.

Take your regular medications, including epilepsy medications, as usual.

During

As a rule, you will be admitted to the hospital when there is a need for long-term monitoring with EEG so that we can assess whether you meet the requirements for having a driving license. The examination is 1 day with long-term monitoring with EEG and video. We want to see if you may have small, short seizures that you may not even notice yourself.

You may be asked to test your attention and ask you to repeat what is said or answer simple questions.
You may also be asked to breathe quickly and deeply (hyperventilate), and flashing lights may be shown during the recording (flicker stimulation).

You will receive more information about this when you come to the examination.

If you often have short bursts of epileptic activity when we do EEG, we will also perform a test of your reaction time with PC-based test equipment where you will press as quickly as you can when you see a flash of light. Some will also be tested in a simple PC-based driving simulator with a steering wheel and pedals. You will receive good information about how the test is carried out in advance.

You may also be asked to count or read aloud from a book for a period of time.

The examination does not hurt.

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I entitled to a driving license if I haven't had seizures for a year?
No. If the examination shows that you have small, short seizures where it is clear that your awareness and reaction ability are reduced, the responsible doctor may assess that you do not meet the health requirements for a driving license despite the fact that you yourself experience that you have not had seizures.

Do the driving license rules also apply to practice driving?
Yes, there are the same health requirements for practice driving. Therefore, you may be referred here for an examination when you are 15 years old when there are questions about whether you can start practice driving when you are 16 years old.

The patient library in Arendal is located in the basement of the main building. It is self-service and open 24 hours a day. Here you can borrow books and read newspapers and magazines.

Many people want to give a floral greeting when they visit a patient at the hospital, but due to allergies and infection risk, several of our departments are flower-free. We appreciate it if you who want to bring a gift choose something other than flowers.
Some patients also react allergically to perfume or creams with perfume. We ask that this be taken into consideration.

Photography, Filming and Sound Recording

Many patients and relatives want to take photos/videos or blog from their time at the hospital. Of course, you are welcome to do so, as long as you respect the privacy of others.

Here are a couple of good tips for using social media for you as a patient or relative:
Respect others. You must have consent if you want to take pictures or videos of patients or staff. All patients have the right to privacy when they are at the hospital.
Parents/guardians decide whether you can take pictures of children or publish pictures of their children online. Parents should consider what is best for the child. When the child is 12 years old, great weight should be placed on what the child thinks. When the child is 15 years old, they decide for themselves whether it is okay to be photographed and whether they should be published.

Sound Recording

It is not illegal to make recordings of conversations you participate in for private use. Publishing and sharing, however, requires the consent of the person you are talking to. Secret recordings of conversations you do not participate in are illegal.

Chapel/Quiet Room

Sometimes we need a room for rest and reflection. We have three such rooms available for you and your relatives. The rooms are open to all regardless of beliefs and faith.

In Arendal, you will find the hospital's quiet room/chapel in the basement of the main building. In Kristiansand, the room is located on the first floor of the main building, north entrance. Both rooms are open 24 hours a day. In Flekkefjord, the chapel is located near the parking lot to the left of the main entrance.
There is also the possibility of holding a memorial service in the chapel in the event of a death.
