The Department of Paediatrics and Adolescents in Arendal admits children and young people aged 0 to 18 who need assessment and treatment. We have specialised staff who receive patients for inpatient, outpatient and day ward treatment.

At BUA, we work in so-called multidisciplinary teams to provide children and young people with the best possible treatment. This means that you may meet a doctor, nurse, clinical nutritionist, physiotherapist and social worker.

To help your child feel safe when they come here, we encourage you as an adult to inform and prepare the child/young person as well as possible. The stay is often better when you talk together about being in hospital and what is planned.

Where should you go?

Our secretary will welcome you at the reception desk on the 6th floor.

For overnight stays

Bring what you need for an overnight stay, such as pyjamas, a toothbrush, etc. You may bring an adult who can sleep and eat here with you and stay with you the whole time. You are also welcome to bring your teddy bear, doll or comfort blanket.

Bring

  • a medication list/overview of regular medications
  • any medical equipment that you/your child use every day.
  • Medications you/your child take daily
  • A tablet/PC, if you wish (free internet is available at the hospital)

What happens

When you arrive at the department, a nurse will meet you. The nurse will talk with you first. Afterwards, a doctor will examine you.

Unfortunately, there may be some waiting time, as someone who has suddenly become ill may arrive and need help before you.

How can you pass the time?

Playroom

We have a playroom. This is a place where children can relax. There you can enjoy yourself, play and take part in various activities. Perhaps you would like to draw, paint or play games, or perhaps you would like to dress up and play in the little kitchen.

All patient rooms have a TV and DVD player. Those staying overnight can borrow DVD films and a PlayStation.

Schoolroom

In the schoolroom, you can do your homework and receive lessons in school subjects. Here you will meet other schoolchildren in a small “class” of 2–5 pupils from all year groups (from Year 1 through upper secondary school). You are welcome in the schoolroom when you feel well enough. If you attend the schoolroom, you will not be marked absent from your school that day.

Meals

The Department of Paediatrics and Adolescents has buffet service in the dining room/lounge. Those who are unable to eat in the lounge will have their meals served in their room.

You may bring an adult who can eat with you. Meals are free. If you have other relatives with you, they can eat in the staff cafeteria. Staff can give them a meal voucher. Relatives pay the cafeteria price.

Coffee, tea and squash are free in the department for everyone.

General information

  • Doctors’ rounds: The paediatricians make their rounds from approximately 09:30 to 11:00.
  • Visiting hours: Visiting hours are unrestricted, unless other guidelines apply. We try to keep the department quiet from 20:00 so that our youngest children can sleep.
  • Telephone: You may use your mobile phone during your stay in the paediatric department, but do not use it too close to technical equipment, and make sure it does not disturb others. See also the tips and advice on mobile phone use under “Practical information” further down this page.
  • Parking: Only regular parking meter spaces are available at the hospital. If you park in the parking garage, you pay afterwards.

The patient library in Arendal is located in the basement of the main building. It is self-service and open 24 hours a day. Here you can borrow books and read newspapers and magazines.

Many people want to bring flowers when visiting a patient in hospital, but due to allergies and the risk of infection, several of our departments are flower-free. If you would like to bring the patient a gift, we would appreciate it if you chose something other than flowers.

Some patients are also allergic to perfume or perfumed creams. We ask you to take this into consideration.

Many patients and next of kin want to take photos/videos or blog about their time in hospital. This is of course permitted, as long as you respect the privacy of other patients and staff.

Here are a few useful tips on using social media for patients and next of kin:

  • Be considerate of others. You must have consent if you want to take photos or videos of patients or staff. All patients are entitled to privacy while in hospital.
  • Parents/guardians decide whether you may take photos of children or publish photos of their children online. Parents should consider what is best for the child. When the child has turned 12, great weight must be given to the child’s views. When the child has turned 15, they decide for themselves whether they are comfortable being photographed and whether the photos may be published.
  • Remember that staff must also give their permission if you want to publish photos you have taken of them.
  • You should remove content you have published if the person concerned asks you to. If someone has posted photos of you online without permission, you can ask them to delete them. If they do not listen, you can contact: www.slettmeg.no.

Audio recording
It is not illegal to record conversations in which you participate for private use. However, publishing and sharing recordings requires consent from the person you are speaking with. Secretly recording conversations in which you do not participate is illegal.

Have you worked in healthcare or received healthcare outside the Nordic countries during the past year?

This may include, for example, a hospital admission, extensive outpatient treatment or a visit to the dentist. In that case, your GP must test you for bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics (for example, MRSA).

Ask your GP to send you the test results before your appointment with us and bring them with you when you come to the hospital.

For a day visit or hospital admission, please bring the following items:

  • Bring indoor shoes, a change of clothes and toiletries
  • Bring your regular medication. It may take time to obtain the same medication from the pharmacy.
  • Bring a list/overview of your regular medications
  • Medical equipment for daily use

Sometimes we need a room for rest and reflection. We have three such rooms available for you and your next of kin. The rooms are open to everyone, regardless of their beliefs or faith.

In Arendal, the hospital’s quiet room/chapel is in the basement of the main building. In Kristiansand, the room is on the first floor of the main building, north entrance. Both rooms are open 24 hours a day. In Flekkefjord, the chapel is by the car park to the left of the main entrance.

Memorial services can also be held in the chapel in the event of a death. Please contact the hospital chaplains to arrange this.

Eg Church in Kristiansand is open every weekday from 08:00 to 18:00 for anyone who would like a room for quiet and reflection. Open from 10:00 to 18:00 on weekends.

Kiosk
The kiosk is located in the lobby on the 1st floor.

The kiosk sells newspapers, magazines, fruit, chocolate, biscuits, ice cream, soft drinks, cards, flowers, some toiletries and various gift items.

You can also buy sweet buns, chicken wraps, rolls, salads, calzones, panini and hot dogs.

Parking spaces at Sørlandet Hospital are subject to a fee Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 20:00. Anyone wishing to park on the hospital grounds must follow the signs and the instructions on the payment machines.

At the hospital in Arendal, cameras read vehicle registration numbers as vehicles enter and exit the parking garage through the Autopay service. Follow the signs and read the instructions.

Pay at the payment machine

If you have not created a profile onAutopay.io​, you can pay at the machine by the main entrance. Enter your vehicle’s registration number. You can pay by card.

Pay automatically

Register as a customer using your registration number and bank card at www.autopay.io. Once you have registered, you will pay automatically every time you park in the garage.

At certain times, for example when there is a lot of snow, it may be difficult to find a parking space. We therefore recommend that you allow plenty of time.

For electric cars:

Electric cars are charged from the first hour.

Do you need to charge your car? Not all our hospital sites have charging stations, and those that do have a limited number. You therefore cannot rely on being able to charge your car while you are at the hospital as a patient or visitor. You can see all charging stations here:

Parents/guardians of children (under 18) who are staying in hospital for more than 14 daysare entitled to free parking for the remainder of the child’s stay. This also applies if the child’s stay begins at another hospital. Contact the hospital department for more information.

A valid disabled parking permit entitles you to free parking in designated spaces.
Contact the Service Desk to register your disabled parking permit. Vehicles displaying a disabled parking permit are exempt from time limits unless otherwise indicated on the sign.

Parking is free for women in labour outside the Women’s Department at the hospital in Kristiansand. The maximum parking time is 2 hours.

Pusterommet is a safe space for children and young people whose seriously ill parents or siblings are hospitalised, or who are themselves hospitalised at the hospital in Arendal. The departments have keys to the room and can provide more information about the service. The room is on the basement floor in wing C and has, among other things, a TV, computer and games.

Smoking can cause discomfort to others. Thank you for being considerate and helping to ensure that Sørlandet Hospital is a smoke-free environment.
