Children as caregivers
Children and young people (0-18 years) are caregivers when parents or siblings have health problems or die. This includes step- and adoptive parents, foster parents and corresponding siblings. The health problems can be mental illness, addiction, serious somatic illness, injury or disabilities.
When someone in the family has health problems, children and young people's thoughts, feelings and everyday lives are affected. They then need understanding and participation to feel safe and belonging.
