Sleep-deprived EEG

EEG (electroencephalography) is a test that records the brain’s electrical activity. Electrodes attached to your head are used to record electrical signals in the brain. These are registered by the EEG machine, where they are processed and displayed as waves on a screen. We also make a video recording of you. The video is an additional aid used when interpreting the recording. A sleep-deprived EEG is performed after a night without sleep.

Sleep deprivation means that you are deprived of the opportunity to sleep. Adults must not sleep at all the night before the test. Children may sleep for up to 4 hours the night before the test. Young children who nap during the day (up to 3 years old) may sleep as usual the night before the test, but will be examined during the day just before their usual bedtime.

For very young children, it may be beneficial to delay their sleep by 1–2 hours, but the child must not sleep just before the test. An EEG after sleep deprivation is performed because sleep deprivation increases the likelihood of abnormal findings in the test.

Referral and assessment

A routine EEG is usually performed first, before the doctor may refer you for a sleep-deprived EEG. In most cases, a doctor in specialist healthcare services refers patients for a sleep-deprived EEG.

Before

Adults

  • You must stay awake all night before the test.
  • Do not drink caffeinated or alcoholic drinks after 6 p.m.
  • You may otherwise eat and drink whatever you like. It is important that you have eaten breakfast before you arrive.
  • Take your regular medication as usual. You must tell the EEG technician which medications you have taken before the recording starts.
  • Your hair should be clean and free of oil, hairspray, hair wax and similar products.

Children under 3 years

  • The test should be performed when the child usually naps during the day. It is therefore important that you contact us and tell us when your child usually gets sleepy during the day so that we can schedule an appointment around that time.
  • The child should be woken approximately 2 hours before they would normally wake up and kept awake until the test.
  • It is important that your child has eaten before you arrive.
  • Regular medication can be taken as usual.

Children aged 3–10 years

  • The child should go to bed at the usual time, but should be woken at 3 a.m. and kept awake until the test.
  • The child can take their regular medication as usual, but please tell the EEG technician which medications they have taken before the recording starts.
  • The child’s hair should be clean and free of oil, hairspray, hair wax and similar products.

General information

Your hair should be clean and free of oil, hairspray, hair wax and similar products.

Bring a hat, cap or other head covering if you wish. Your hair may be wet and sticky after the electrode paste is washed out following the test.

Some locations have a washroom where you can wash your hair.

During

Electrodes are attached to your scalp using electrode paste. The paste holds the electrodes in place and ensures good signal transmission. There are usually 35 electrodes in total. Afterwards, you lie undisturbed on a couch with the lights off for about an hour.

Examination of young children

It is essential for the test that the child lies or sits completely still while the electrodes are attached. An adult should therefore accompany young children. Young children can sit on an adult’s lap while we attach the electrodes. Feel free to bring something to help keep the child calm, such as a bottle of drink, a pacifier, toys, books, an iPad or similar.

At the beginning of the test, it is common to induce specific types of brain activity by having you breathe deeply for three minutes. The test usually takes 1.5 to 2 hours.

After

The results of the test will be sent to the doctor/department that referred you.

Many people want to bring flowers when visiting a patient in hospital, but due to allergies and the risk of infection, several of our departments are flower-free. If you wish to bring the patient a gift, we would appreciate it if you chose something other than flowers.

Some patients also have allergic reactions to perfume or perfumed creams. We ask you to take this into consideration.

Many patients and relatives wish to take photos/videos or blog about their time in hospital. Of course, you may do so, as long as you respect the privacy of other patients and staff.

    • Parents/guardians decide whether you may take photos of children or publish photos of their children online. Parents should consider what is in the child’s best interests. When the child turns 12, their views must be given considerable weight. When the child turns 15, they decide for themselves whether it is okay to be photographed and whether the photos may be published.
    • Remember that staff must also give their permission if you want to publish photos you have taken of them.
    • You should remove content you have published if the person concerned asks you to. If others have posted pictures of you online without permission, you can ask them to delete them. If they do not comply, you can contact: www.slettmeg.no.
