A knee replacement surgery may be relevant for osteoarthritis (artritis) in the knee, fracture injuries, congenital injuries, or other changes in the knee. The damaged and often painful joint is replaced with a prosthesis.

Symptoms

When the cartilage in the knee wears down, the knee loses its natural smooth surface. This can lead to stiffness, reduced mobility, and a tendency to buckle. You experience pain with exertion and eventually also at rest and at night. Sometimes, you don't achieve sufficient pain relief with exercise and pain medication. In such cases, it may be relevant to replace the kneecap and joint surfaces with an artificial knee joint, i.e., a prosthesis.

manipulation. Knee prostheses come as partial prostheses (unicondylar prostheses) and total prostheses. In total prostheses, the surface of the end of the thigh bone (femur) and shin bone (tibia) is replaced. In partial prostheses, only the inside (medial) or only the outside (lateral) or only the joint between the kneecap and thigh bone is replaced by a prosthesis.

Before

At most hospitals, you will be called in for a preparation day a few weeks before the operation. This is when necessary preliminary examinations are carried out and you will receive information about the planned treatment from us.

Once the operation date is determined, contact the municipal physiotherapist/occupational therapist regarding aids after the operation.

Remember to bring crutches with you upon admission. It may also be a good idea to bring clothes that are easy to move in and shoes that are easy to put on and fit well on your foot.

Fasting and medication

On the day of the operation, you should arrive fasting.That means you should not eat, drink, smoke, use chewing tobacco, or take lozenges/cough drops after midnight. You should only take any medications that the anesthesiologist has previously said you should take. This will be clarified on the preparation day prior to the operation.

Be careful when washing your body.

After showering, you should not use perfume, creams, makeup, jewelry, piercings, or nail polish, and you should wear clean clothes. In the vast majority of knee operations, anesthesia is administered in the back, a so-called spinal anesthesia where you are awake. Occasionally, general anesthesia is chosen in consultation with the anesthesiologist, and you will then sleep during the procedure.

An anesthesiologist will sit beside you throughout the entire operation. He or she is your point of contact and will ensure you are doing well. You will not feel any pain. However, you will notice some shaking in your body while the orthopedic surgeon replaces the joint. You will also be able to hear hammering, sawing, and drilling.

If you wish, you can listen to music during the operation. You can bring your own or borrow it from us.

Operating time for knee replacements varies somewhat, but is usually around 80 minutes.

After

: A typical hospital stay is 1-3 days with daily exercise and activity. You will receive instruction in exercises and crutch walking from a physiotherapist while you are at the hospital. Your own effort is crucial for a successful outcome.

Activity

It's important to get back on your feet quickly. As early as 3-5 hours after the surgery, you can, with assistance, get out of bed. From the first day after the surgery, you should walk with 2 crutches or other suitable aids.

You can generally put weight on the operated knee.

You can get in and out of bed on both the operated and unoperated side.

.You can lie on the unoperated side after the surgery with a pillow between your legs. You can also lie on your stomach. You can lie on the operated side when it is not painful.

Knee replacement surgery - exercises

Pain

translation: It's common to experience pain in the days and weeks after the operation. It is not dangerous to use your knee even if it is a little painful. You will be given pain medication to reduce the pain to an acceptable level. The medication will be gradually reduced as the pain decreases. Most people get a pain-free and well-functioning knee, but it may take time before the pain is completely gone and the movement is optimal. For some, it may take up to 1 year.

: Precautions

After the operation, you can live as normally as possible. You can gradually resume physical activities. Avoid situations where you could fall. Also avoid stresses such as jumping and heavy lifting.

There is usually no limitation on movement after a knee replacement surgery. You can put weight on the knee immediately after the operation, but you should pay attention if you feel pain. Use crutches to walk safely and relieve pain.

: Wound care

The skin will be closed either with a dissolvable suture that doesn't need to be removed, or with sutures/staples that need to be removed after 2-3 weeks. Dressings should be changed as needed. You will receive information about how to care for both the sutures and the dressing before you leave. We recommend avoiding swimming in pools/bathtubs/saltwater for the first 3 weeks.

Training/crutches

: It is important to have daily activity and exercise after discharge from the hospital.

: Most people will be able to manage the training on their own.but we recommend guidance from a local physiotherapist to start. The length of follow-up with a physiotherapist is individual.

You can stop using crutches when you can walk normally without limping. You will receive information about this and be trained on it during your hospital stay.

Activities

: Hiking and other light activities are recommended.: Sexual intercourse can be resumed as far as pain allows.

Sick leave/prescriptions

Usually, you need a sick note for 2-8 weeks, depending on the type of job.You will receive a prescription for pain medication. By appointment, some will also receive a prescription for blood-thinning medication..

You should wait with driving until you have discontinued using crutches, and your leg feels strong enough to handle driving. You should also not drive if you are taking pain medication with a red warning triangle. The Road Traffic Act applies.

Getting in and out of the car as a passenger: slide the seat far back and tilt the backrest well backwards.
