Hearing aid fitting

A hearing aid is a technical aid that can help you hear better. A hearing aid cannot replace normal hearing, but if it is well fitted, it can improve your quality of life.

Prior to this appointment, you have been assessed for a hearing aid. During this assessment, you will receive information about different types of hearing aids, and in consultation with an audiologist, you can choose which variant you will receive.

NAV (Norwegian Labour and Welfare Administration) has agreements with various hearing aid suppliers, and the hearing center has access to the same hearing aids as private providers. NAV covers the cost of hearing aids up to a certain amount. Some devices will therefore have a co-payment. You will receive information about the co-payment if it applies.

In collaboration with the audiologist, you will find out how the hearing aids can be adjusted to get the most benefit from them. You will also learn how to care for them.

To succeed in transitioning to becoming a hearing aid user, it is beneficial if you have the right motivation and knowledge.

You will meet both a doctor and an audiologist at your first meeting at the Ear, Nose, and Throat department. The doctor will examine your ears, and an audiologist will perform various hearing tests. Afterwards, the need for a hearing aid will be assessed.

Hearing aid fitting

The audiologist will fit the hearing aid based on the hearing test results. At first, the sound may seem loud and intrusive. Your own voice may feel foreign or uncomfortable, especially. Some people find the sound metallic.

It is important that you describe your experience of the new sound. Any discomfort can be reduced by adjusting the sound, but it is largely a matter of getting used to it. Your brain needs time to adapt to the new soundscape.

You may be one of those who experience no discomfort, or you may need some time. If you become tired of the sound from the hearing aids, it can be positive, similar to how you become tired from other types of exercise. Your experiences will tell you when it is wise to take a break.

Remember that the audiologist needs feedback from you to be able to give you advice and guidance.

You will receive the necessary information about use and care of the device. For a first-time user, many questions often arise. Feel free to bring a family member or friend who can help you remember the information you receive.

The first time with a new hearing aid

It is important to use the trial period well. Use the hearing aids as much as possible and in various situations. Note any challenges that arise. Keywords here are the sounds you hear and the conversations you have, but also how it is to put them on. The degree of comfort and whether they cause itching or pain. Note that you should not use the hearing aids if they cause pain.

Many who start using hearing aids are surprised by how many sounds they hear. Everyday sounds that you may not have heard in a long time. Such sounds may seem disturbing, especially when it is difficult to hear what people are saying. It is important to know that such sounds are particularly important to hear for someone with impaired hearing. They contribute to awakening thoughts and feelings that you would miss without the hearing aids. Thoughts and feelings contribute to increased brain activity, which is important for your brain health. It is an important part of getting used to it to become confident and accustomed to all the sounds around us.

Follow-up and monitoring

You will be followed up with hearing aid checks with an audiologist during the trial period. Tell the audiologist about your experiences at the follow-up appointment. How many checks you need depends on how the trial period goes.

After being fitted with a hearing aid, you can contact the hearing center directly if you have problems with the hearing aid, if you want to book an appointment, or if it needs adjustment.

If you have received a hearing aid from a private audiologist or specialist, you must contact this specialist for a service appointment.

NAV covers expenses for new hearing aids every six years. Your audiologist will help you with the application and further process.

It is your responsibility to insure your hearing aid.

The patient library in Arendal is located in the basement of the main building. It is self-service and open 24 hours a day. Photography, filming, and sound recording

Many patients and relatives want to take photos/videos or blog about their time at the hospital. This is of course possible, as long as you respect the privacy of other patients and staff.

Here are a couple of good tips for using social media for you as a patient or relative:

Parents/guardians decide whether you can take pictures of children or publish pictures of their children online. Parents should consider what is best for the child. When the child is 12 years old, great weight should be placed on what the child thinks. When the child is 15 years old, they decide for themselves whether it is okay to be photographed and whether they can be published.
Remember that staff must also give their permission if you want to publish pictures you have taken of them.
You should remove content you have published if the person involved asks you to. If others have posted pictures of you on the internet without permission, you can ask them to delete it. If you are not heard, you can contact:

It is not illegal to record conversations you participate in for private use. Publishing and sharing, however, requires the consent of the person you are talking to. Secret recordings of conversations you do not participate in are illegal.

Have you worked in healthcare or received healthcare outside of Scandinavia in the last year?

This could be, for example, a hospital stay, extensive outpatient treatment, or a visit to the dentist. Then your family doctor must test you for bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics (such as MRSA).

Ask your family doctor to send you the test results before your appointment with us and bring them with you to the hospital.

Chapel/Quiet room

Sometimes we need a room for rest and reflection. We have three such rooms available for you and your relatives. The rooms are open to everyone regardless of beliefs and faith.

In Arendal, you will find the hospital's quiet room/chapel in the basement of the main building. In Kristiansand, the room is located on the first floor of the main building, north entrance. Both rooms are open 24 hours a day. In Flekkefjord, the chapel is located near the parking lot to the left of the main entrance.

There is also the possibility of holding a memorial service in the chapel in the event of a death. This is arranged by contacting the hospital chaplains.

Do you need to charge your car? Not all of our hospital areas have charging stations, and those that do have a limited number. You cannot therefore rely on being able to charge your car while you are a patient or visitor. You can see all charging stations here:
