Abortion

In Norway, women have a statutory right to decide to have an abortion before the 18th week of pregnancy (17+6). Later in the pregnancy, the application must be considered by an abortion board.

It can be difficult to decide whether to continue or terminate a pregnancy. If you need someone to talk to, you can call Amathea on 90 65 90 60. Amathea is a free counselling service for choices relating to pregnancy and abortion.

Planned follow-up for an unintended pregnancy usually starts with your GP, who refers you to the hospital. You can also contact the hospital directly for an examination and further follow-up; you do not need a referral from your GP.

If you are unintentionally pregnant and considering terminating the pregnancy, it is important to contact your GP or the hospital directly as early as possible after week 6. Ideally, you should be more than 6 weeks pregnant at your first consultation. This is so that an ultrasound can confirm that the pregnancy is correctly located in the uterus.

Referral and assessment

If you are seeing your GP first

Your GP will assess how far along the pregnancy is before referring you to the hospital.

If you are going to the hospital first

At the hospital, you will have a consultation with a nurse and/or gynaecologist. A vaginal ultrasound and gynaecological examination will be performed to determine how far along the pregnancy is, and you may also be tested for chlamydia.

You will receive thorough information and have a consultation before a final decision is made about treatment. The abortion is usually induced with medication. Surgical abortion is rarely used due to the risks of general anaesthesia and unnecessary surgery on the uterus.

You will also be asked to sign the self-declaration form “Request for abortion”.

At the hospital, you will have a consultation with a nurse and/or gynaecologist. You will have a vaginal ultrasound and a gynaecological examination to determine how far along the pregnancy is. The abortion method will be decided; most commonly, the abortion is induced with medication. Surgical abortion is rarely used due to the risks of general anaesthesia and unnecessary surgery on the uterus.

You will receive thorough information and have a consultation before the final treatment is decided.

Follow-up

No follow-up is required apart from a check-up. You can find more information under each method. You must take a pregnancy test yourself after 4 weeks.

If you need a supportive conversation after an abortion, you can contactAmathea Foundation, tel. 90 65 90 60.

Many people want to bring flowers when visiting a patient in hospital, but due to allergies and the risk of infection, several of our departments are flower-free. If you would like to bring the patient a gift, we would appreciate it if you chose something other than flowers.

Some patients are also allergic to perfume or perfumed creams. We ask you to take this into consideration.

Many patients and relatives want to take photos/videos or blog about their time in hospital. You are of course welcome to do so, as long as you respect the privacy of other patients and staff.

Once the child has turned 12, their opinion must be given considerable weight. Once the child has turned 15, they decide for themselves whether they are happy to be photographed and whether the photos may be published.
