During an MRI examination, you lie in a magnetic field, while the MRI machine creates images using radio waves. An MRI examination does not involve any form of X-ray radiation.

MRI examinations provide particularly good representation of changes in muscles, connective tissue, and the central nervous system. In addition, MRI can depict disease changes in the skeleton, heart, breasts, blood vessels, urinary tract, and internal organs including the intestines.

During the examination, you lie on a bench that is moved into a tubular machine that is open at both ends. You lie with your head or legs first, depending on which part of the body you are examining.

While the images are being taken, you hear a series of knocking sounds. It is important to lie still while this knocking is happening. You are given earplugs or earmuffs that dampen the knocking sound.If you feel the need to bring a relative, they can sit with you while the examination is taking place. The MRI checklist also applies to relatives who will be in the room.If you are examining the pelvic organs, it may also be necessary to administer an injection of a substance that causes the intestines to stop moving for a short time. Intestinal movements can cause interference in the images.

The examination time varies from 15 minutes to 1 1/2 hours, depending on which area you are examining and how many images we need to take.

Does it hurt?

The examination itself does not hurt, but it can be difficult to lie still. That is why it is important to find a comfortable position. You get pillows and other support so that you can lie still.

You may feel warm during the examination. This is not painful or dangerous. This feeling disappears when the examination is over.

In some examinations, it is necessary to administer contrast fluid into a vein in the arm so that organs or blood vessels are clearly visible in the images. Besides a prick in the arm, this usually causes no discomfort.

If you are admitted to the hospital, you will return to the department. If you have been given contrast fluid, you must wait 30 minutes. Otherwise, you can go home when you are finished. If you have used sedatives, you should not drive yourself.

If you have severely reduced kidney function, you may experience serious side effects after using MRI contrast agents. Therefore, special precautions are taken for this patient group. MRI contrast agents can be used after careful medical assessment, in cases where it is necessary to diagnose medical conditions.

If it is relevant to give you contrast during the examination, it will sometimes be necessary to clarify kidney function using a blood test.

The patient library in Arendal is located in the basement of the main building. It is self-service and open 24 hours a day. Here you can borrow books and read newspapers and magazines.

Flowers and perfume

Sometimes we need a room for rest and reflection. We have three such rooms available for you and your relatives. The rooms are open to all regardless of beliefs and faith.
In Arendal, you will find the hospital's quiet room/chapel in the basement of the main building. In Kristiansand, the room is located on the 1st floor of the main building, north entrance. Both rooms are open 24 hours a day. In Flekkefjord, the chapel is located near the parking lot to the left of the main entrance.
Eg church in Kristiansand is open every weekday between 08:00-18:00, for those who want a room for silence and reflection. Open from 10-18 on weekends.

Photography, filming and sound recording

Respect others. You must have consent if you want to take pictures or videos of patients or employees. All patients have the right to privacy when they are at the hospital.

There is also the possibility of holding a memorial service in the chapel in the event of a death. This is arranged by contacting the hospital chaplains.
