Physical exercise for mental health disorders

Physical exercise involves regular and structured strength and endurance training, with intensity and workload adapted to your fitness level and the type of exercise you enjoy. We recommend exercising for at least 150 minutes per week, spread over 2–3 sessions, for a period of at least 8–12 weeks.

Physical exercise has beneficial effects on anxiety, restlessness, symptoms of depression and psychosis, concentration, attention, memory, quality of life, social functioning and sleep.

Referral and assessment

Physical exercise may be offered as part of the treatment provided by your local District Psychiatric Centre or municipality. Your healthcare provider will refer you to an instructor for the exercise programme. The instructor will then contact you and arrange a separate appointment to provide information about the programme.

Before

We recommend that you discuss any medical conditions you have with the exercise instructor so that the training can be adapted to your physical health. It is important that you are motivated to take part in the programme.

During

We will agree on the goals and methods of your treatment together. It is important that you give feedback on how you find the exercise programme and other arrangements, so that future exercise can be adapted to you as well as possible. When you start the programme, you will complete various physical tests.

As exercise becomes part of your routine and your body gets used to the increased workload, the intensity will gradually increase. At the same time, the training will always be adapted to your individual progress and preferences.

You will be offered the option of keeping an exercise log while taking part in the programme. You will also be offered physical tests similar to those you completed when you started training, to assess the effects of exercise on your strength and endurance during the training period.

At any time during the training period, you can ask your exercise instructor to help you adapt your training as your needs or preferences change or develop.

After

After completing the physical exercise programme, we encourage you to continue exercising regularly.

Many patients and relatives wish to take photos/videos or blog during their time in hospital. This is of course permitted, as long as you respect the privacy of other patients and staff.

Here are a couple of helpful tips for using social media if you are a patient or relative:

  • Be considerate of others. You must obtain consent if you wish to take photos or videos of patients or staff. All patients are entitled to privacy while in hospital.
  • Parents/guardians decide whether you may take photos of children or publish photos of their children online. Parents should consider what is in the child’s best interests. Once the child has turned 12, great weight must be given to the child’s opinion. Once the child has turned 15, they decide for themselves whether they agree to being photographed and whether the photos may be published.
  • Remember that staff must also give their permission if you wish to publish photos you have taken of them.
  • You should remove content you have published if the person concerned asks you to. If someone has posted photos of you online without permission, you can ask them to delete them. If they do not comply, you can contact: www.slettmeg.no.

Audio recording
It is not illegal to record conversations in which you yourself participate for private use. However, publishing and sharing requires consent from the person you are speaking with. Secretly recording conversations in which you do not participate is illegal.

We encourage everyone to use their mobile phones considerately and to be considerate of fellow patients. It is important to put your phone on silent at night, and on silent or vibrate during the day. To avoid disturbing other patients, it is a good idea to leave the room if you need to have a lengthy conversation.

Smoking can cause discomfort to others. Thank you for being considerate and helping to ensure that Sørlandet Hospital is a smoke-free environment.

If you need an interpreter, you must notify the hospital well in advance of your appointment. Interpreter costs are covered by the health service.Helsenorge.no
