Eastern Agder DPS

We provide specialist mental health services for adults over the age of 18 with mental health conditions. The department offers day, inpatient, outpatient and outreach services, including emergency services. Within the Mental Health Clinic (KPH), the department has a special responsibility for services for patients with eating disorders. We consist of eight units located in Bjorbekk in Arendal, Grimstad and Tvedestrand.

At Eastern Agder DPS, we focus on achieving good collaboration and involving patients in their care. Together with you as a patient, we want to find good solutions and make healthy choices. We believe that your strengths and resources can be decisive in your recovery.

Our services are therefore based on a recovery-oriented approach. This means that we want to maintain a clear focus on coping when working with our patients. Our treatment methods are based on equality, respect and participation, so that you as a patient feel that you have an important role in your own recovery.

Referrals

The common postal address for all referrals by letter to adult psychiatry in Eastern Agder is:

P.O. Box 416
4604 Kristiansand

Referrals are processed within 10 working days by the department's assessment team.
Patients are usually informed of their first appointment in the reply letter.

Appointments with us can be held by video call, telephone call or in person as before. You choose what works best for you.

For you as a family member

When the patient is undergoing assessment/treatment with us, it is important that you, as a family member, are involved in the treatment process.

This may include:

  • the opportunity to provide information that may be central to the treatment
  • meetings with family members during treatment
  • a forum where you can express your thoughts and feelings
  • advice and guidance on where family members and children as family members can turn for help

We obtain the patient's consent regarding whether we may communicate with you as a family member. If consent is given, we would like to involve you in the treatment as early as possible.

During the first sessions, we prepare an assessment and treatment plan. The plan guides the treatment and is drawn up in collaboration with the patient, the treating clinician and, where relevant, family members. The assessment and treatment plan may be updated and changed during treatment. If this happens, you will be informed.

Family members play a central role when the patient is discharged. It is therefore important that you know the planned discharge date, what has been done during the admission, and what follow-up is planned.

All patients prepare a crisis plan during their stay. The crisis plan is intended as a tool and should help the patient more easily recognise signs that things are beginning to become difficult, and identify measures that can then be put in place. It is important that family members are familiar with the plan's content and their role in it.

Patients who have children or siblings under the age of 18 havechildren as next of kin. Children as next of kin are offered the opportunity to come to us for a conversation with one or more of our skilled milieu therapists.

We hope to work well with you as a family member, and welcome you to get in touch if you have any questions or anything you would like to share.

Many patients and relatives wish to take photos/videos or blog about their time in hospital. Of course, you may do so, as long as you respect the privacy of other patients and staff.

Here are a few useful tips on using social media for patients and relatives:

  • Be considerate of others. You must obtain consent if you want to take photos or videos of patients or staff. All patients are entitled to privacy while in hospital.
  • Parents/guardians decide whether you may take photos of children or publish photos of their children online. Parents must consider what is best for the child. Once a child has turned 12, their views must be given considerable weight. Once a child has turned 15, they decide for themselves whether they are happy to be photographed and whether the photos may be published.
  • Remember that staff must also give their permission if you want to publish photos you have taken of them.
  • You should remove content you have published if the person concerned asks you to. If someone has posted photos of you online without permission, you can ask them to delete them. If they do not respond, you can contact: www.slettmeg.no.

Audio recordings
It is not illegal to record conversations in which you take part for private use. However, publishing and sharing recordings requires consent from the person you are speaking with. Secretly recording conversations in which you do not participate is illegal.

We encourage everyone to use their mobile phones considerately and be mindful of fellow patients. It is important to put your phone on silent at night and on silent or vibrate during the day. Out of consideration for other patients, it is a good idea to leave the room if you need to have a long conversation.

Smoking can cause discomfort to others. Thank you for being considerate and helping to ensure that Sørlandet Hospital remains a smoke-free environment.
