Epilepsy surgery, adults
Even with the use of epilepsy medication, 20-30% of patients continue to have seizures. Some of these can be helped with surgery.
We are considering epilepsy surgery:
- if the seizure situation is very debilitating
- if medications needed to control seizures cause unacceptable side effects or do not provide the desired seizure control
- if we have grounds for believing that the seizures originate from a well-defined area
- if the risk of complications and any potential outcomes associated with surgery is considered to be less than the disadvantages of living with frequent seizures
For us to evaluate you for possible surgery, you must:
- have tried at least two types of epilepsy medication
- your three most common seizures have been recorded during an EEG examination
Referral and assessment
The National Treatment Service for Surgical Epilepsy at Oslo University Hospital has a national function for surgical epilepsy. You can find more information about referral procedures on the treatment service's website.
Before
You should take your epilepsy medication as usual and can swallow these with a little water.
The hair is usually shaved away only in the surgical incision. The incision is made so that the scar is as invisible as possible after the wound has healed.
The results after epilepsy surgery are generally good, but vary with epilepsy type and where the seizures start. Many become completely seizure-free, and those who do not become seizure-free usually achieve improvement after the surgery.
Be aware
As with all surgeries, there is a certain risk associated with the anesthesia itself and a small risk of bleeding or infection. The thorough evaluations before surgery should prevent the risk of damage to functions such as language, memory, sight, hearing, or movement (motor skills).
If a portion of the temporal lobe has been removed, there is usually a slight memory impairment and a reduction in the visual field. This is a normal consequence of the surgery and goes away, usually after a few weeks.
If the surgery has been performed close to a language area, some may experience difficulty finding words for a period. This improves gradually as the swelling after the surgery subsides.
