Children and Youth Department (BUA), Arendal

The child and adolescent department in Arendal accepts children and young people between 0 and 18 years of age who need assessment and treatment. We have specialized staff who receive patients for inpatient care, outpatient treatment, and day hospital treatment.

At I BUA, we work in so-called interdisciplinary teams to offer children and young people the best possible care. This means that with us, you can meet a doctor, nurse, clinical nutritionist, physiotherapist, and social worker.

To ensure your child feels safe when they come here, we encourage you as an adult to inform and prepare the child/young person as best as possible. The stay is often better when you talk together about being in hospital and what is planned.

: Where do you meet?

You will be welcomed by our secretary at the reception desk on the 6th floor.

Overnight stay

Bring what you need for your stay, such as pajamas, toothbrush, etc. You can bring an adult with you, who can sleep and eat here with you, and who can be with you all the time. You are also welcome to bring your teddy bear, doll, or comfort blanket.

Bring it.

  • : medical equipment that you/the child uses daily.
  • : Medications you/your child uses daily
  • : Possibly a tablet/PC (there is free internet at the hospital)

What's happening?

When you arrive at the department, you will be greeted by a nurse. The nurse will talk with you for a bit first. Afterwards, a doctor will examine you.

Unfortunately, there may be some waiting time, as someone who is acutely ill and needs assistance may arrive before you.

: How to pass the time?

: Playroom

We have a playhouse. This is the children's haven. There you can relax, play, and do many different activities. Maybe you want to draw, paint, or play games, or maybe you feel like dressing up and playing in the kitchen corner.

All patient rooms have a TV and DVD player. It is possible to borrow DVD movies and a Playstation for those who are staying overnight.

: Schoolhouse

At the school study room, you can get your homework done and receive instruction in subjects. Here you meet other schoolchildren in a small "class" of 2-5 students from all grade levels (from 1st grade through upper secondary school). You are welcome to the school study room when you are up to it. If you are at the school study room, you will not be marked absent from your school that day.

: Food service

On the children's and youth ward, we have buffet-style service in the dining room/common room. Those who are unable to eat in the common room will have their meals served in their rooms.

translation: You can bring an adult to eat with you. The food is free. If there are more relatives with you, they can eat in the staff canteen. They can then get a meal ticket from the staff. Relatives pay the canteen price.

: Coffee, tea, and juice are free on the department for everyone.

Many people wish to bring a floral greeting when visiting a patient in the hospital, but due to allergies and the risk of infection, several of our departments are flower-free. We would appreciate it if you who wish to bring a gift for the patient choose something other than flowers.

Some patients also react allergically to perfume or creams containing perfume. We ask that this be taken into consideration.

translation:Many patients and relatives want to take photos/videos or blog about their time at the hospital. Of course, you are welcome to do so, as long as you respect the privacy of other patients and staff.

Here are a couple of good tips for using social media for you as a patient or caregiver:

  • Respect others. You must have consent if you want to take photos or videos of patients or employees. All patients are entitled to privacy when they are at the hospital.
  • It is the parents/guardians who decide whether you can take pictures of children or publish pictures of them online. Parents should consider what is best for the child. When the child has turned 12, great weight should be given to what the child thinks. When the child has turned 15, they themselves decide whether it is okay to be photographed and whether it should potentially be published.
  • Remember that employees must also give their consent if you want to publish photos you have taken of them.
  • sjekk.no www.delete-me.no.

: Audio recording
It is not illegal to record conversations you are participating in for private use. However, publishing and sharing requires consent from the person you are speaking with. Secret recordings of conversations you are not participating in are illegal.
