Department for Treatment of Substance Abuse and Addiction (ARA)

ARA offers treatment for people with substance abuse and addiction problems, including gambling. Treatment can be individual or group-based and includes outpatient services during the day, as well as 24-hour treatment where needed.

Treatment will normally include assessment, diagnosis, and treatment. The department uses various treatment methods: cognitive therapy, motivational interviewing, seeking safety, the 12-step model, neurofeedback, psychoeducation, physical activity and therapy, as well as assessments with tests and samples (e.g., urine samples and blood samples).

In addition, the department offers more specialized follow-up, such as LAR treatment (medication-assisted treatment for opioid dependence).

ARA has outpatient clinics and inpatient units in Kristiansand and Arendal, as well as an inpatient unit in Byglandsfjord. In addition, ARA has outpatient clinics in Mandal, Farsund, and Flekkefjord.

Many patients and relatives want to take photos/videos or blog about their time at the hospital. Of course, you are welcome to do so, as long as you respect the privacy of other patients and employees.

Here are a couple of good tips for using social media for you as a patient or relative:

  • Respect others. You must have consent if you want to take pictures or videos of patients or employees. All patients have a right to privacy when they are at the hospital.
  • Parents/guardians decide whether you can take pictures of children or publish pictures of their children online. Parents should consider what is best for the child. When the child is 12 years old, great weight should be given to what the child thinks. When the child is 15 years old, they decide for themselves whether it is okay to be photographed and whether they should be published.
  • Remember that employees must also give their permission if you want to publish pictures you have taken of them.
  • You should remove content you have published if the person involved asks you to. If others have posted pictures of you on the internet without permission, you can ask the person to delete them. If you are not heard, you can contact: www.slettmeg.no.

Sound recording
It is not illegal to make recordings of conversations you participate in for private use. Publishing and sharing, however, requires consent from the person you are talking to. Secret recordings of conversations you do not participate in are illegal.
