Facts

We have planned for the population’s needs up to 2040. The budget framework for the emergency care building, including the overall ICT concept, is NOK 1,884 million (July 2025). The project budget for the municipality’s health centre is NOK 619 million.

  • The new building will be 11,000 square metres
  • We will renovate 2,880 square metres in the existing main building
  • Kristiansand municipality is building a health centre next door, covering approximately 6,000 square metres

Why are we building a new facility?

The existing areas are too small and are not suited to new working methods or professional development. The layout makes it difficult to protect patients’ privacy, maintain confidentiality and accommodate relatives. The technical infrastructure is outdated and undersized. The areas are not very flexible given the large number of patients. For example, the current emergency department is designed for 14,000 patients a year, while we now have well over 30,000.

How large a building do we need?

The new emergency care building is planned to meet the needs of the population in the hospital’s catchment area in Kristiansand. We have calculated what the population will need up to 2040. In the video below, you can learn more about how we make these projections.
