Rights relating to patient and caregiver education

Patients, caregivers and companions may be entitled to reimbursement of travel and accommodation expenses, meal allowances and training benefits when taking part in group training activities. Patients and caregivers also have the right to choose their place of treatment.

Patients and caregivers may be entitled to coverage of travel expenses for training courses at the hospital. The GP or hospital doctor decides whether the patient and caregiver need to be referred for training.

As a general rule, you will receive financial support for your journey at a standard rate per kilometre, regardless of the mode of transport you used. If you are travelling by plane, you must book your trip through Pasientreiser. You must pay a co-payment for the journey unless you have an exemption card. For caregivers, the co-payment is not included in the exemption card scheme.

Separate rates and rules apply to reimbursement of food and accommodation expenses. You must pay any expenses exceeding these rates yourself. You must book your own accommodation.

If you have questions about completing a travel expense claim form, coverage of travel expenses or booking your patient journey, contact Pasientreiser: 05515.

The patient pays a co-payment for training courses, equivalent to the outpatient rate at the hospital. Caregivers do not pay a co-payment. The patient’s co-payment counts towards the exemption card scheme. Children do not pay a co-payment.

As a patient, you may be granted sick leave to take part in training at the hospital. You should clarify this with the referring doctor. You can also apply to your employer for welfare leave.

If you are the caregiver of an adult patient, you can apply to your employer for welfare leave to attend the course.

Training benefits are for those who need to be absent from work to take part in essential training for a child or an adult with a disability or long-term illness.
