Digital Wound Care

Digital wound care enables patients with chronic wounds to receive help at home, through collaboration between the hospital and municipal health and care services or their GP via video.

Video consultation

Digital wound care is offered to outpatient wound patients who are not in hospital. Wound care is provided by a nurse in the municipality or by a GP. Healthcare professionals are equipped with a camera that transmits live video to a supervisor/nurse.

Long-term treatment

Wound patients often need long-term treatment with support from the hospital and municipality. Many patients have reduced functional capacity, and some spend periods in a health centre or nursing home, or receive home care services in their municipality. For these patients, avoiding the journey to hospital may be beneficial, and they can instead have their wound checked by video consultation where they are.

The balance between video consultations and in-person outpatient appointments will depend on the wound’s progress and the need for further examinations.

Video consultations are scheduled in the same way as in-person outpatient appointments.

Treatment using a camera

The person treating the wound uses a camera. A nurse at the hospital views the wound on a computer screen at the hospital while the patient receives wound care. The person participating in the video consultation will make the same observations as if the patient were having a check-up at the hospital.

The hospital nurse can bring in a doctor if needed. If the video consultation indicates that an in-person check-up at the hospital is needed, the patient will be offered one.

After the dressing change, the further plan and follow-up will be agreed with the patient.

Further follow-up

Wound care is documented in the patient’s medical record at the hospital. This documentation is sent digitally to the municipal health service. No recordings or images from the video consultation will be stored.

Further follow-up will follow the usual procedure, with support from, for example, home nursing and wound checks at the hospital.

Many people wish to bring flowers when visiting a patient in hospital, but because of allergies and the risk of infection, several of our wards are flower-free. If you would like to bring the patient a gift, we would appreciate it if you chose something other than flowers.

Some patients are also allergic to perfume or perfumed creams. We ask you to take this into consideration.

Many patients and relatives wish to take photos/videos or blog about their time in hospital. This is of course permitted, as long as you respect the privacy of other patients and staff.

Here are a few helpful tips for using social media if you are a patient or relative:

  • Be considerate of others. You must have consent if you want to take photos or videos of patients or staff. All patients are entitled to privacy while in hospital.
  • Parents/guardians decide whether you may take photos of children or publish photos of their children online. Parents should consider what is best for the child. When the child turns 12, their views must be given considerable weight. When the child turns 15, they decide for themselves whether they are comfortable being photographed and whether the photos may be published.
  • Remember that staff must also give their permission if you want to publish photos you have taken of them.
  • You should remove content you have published if the person concerned asks you to. If someone has posted photos of you online without permission, you can ask them to delete them. If they do not comply, you can contact: www.slettmeg.no.

Audio recording
It is not illegal to record conversations in which you yourself participate for private use. However, publishing and sharing recordings requires the consent of the person you are speaking with. Secretly recording conversations in which you do not participate is illegal.
