Day Surgery Unit, Kristiansand

We care for children and adults undergoing day surgery in orthopaedics, gynaecology, general surgery, ear, nose and throat, or other examinations requiring anaesthesia. We prepare you for surgery and care for you after the procedure until you are ready to go home. To ensure your operation can go ahead, it is important that you read the information below and prepare accordingly.

Fasting

You must fast before arriving for your operation.

Fasting means:

You must not eat or drink during the last6 hoursbefore arriving at the hospital.

You must not smoke, use snuff, chew gum, or have lozenges or similar during the last2 hoursbefore arrival.


Exceptions:

You may drink clear fluids (water, cordial, or tea/coffee without milk) until2 hoursbefore arrival.

You may swallow any medicines you are instructed to take on the day of surgery with a small glass of water.

Medicines

As a general rule, you should take your regular medicines on the day of surgery.

Asthma:

If you use an asthma inhaler, you must always use it on the day of surgery just before leaving home. This also applies if you only use the inhaler as needed. Bring the inhaler with you on the day of surgery.


Blood pressure medicines:

If you take blood pressure medicine in the ACE inhibitor or angiotensin II antagonist classes, do not take these tablets on the day of surgery. If you are unsure whether you take this type of medicine, contact your GP.

Diabetes:

  • If you havetype 2 diabetes, do not take your diabetes medicines on the day of surgery. If you take medicines containing metformin, do not take this medicine the day before surgery either.

  • If you havetype 1 diabetes, do not take insulin on the day of surgery. If you have an insulin pump, do not turn it off. Bring your own insulin (pen) to the hospital on the day of surgery.

Hygiene

To prevent infection, you must shower on the day of surgery. Pay particular attention to your intimate area, hands and feet. Do not shave the surgical area; this will be done at the hospital if necessary. If you have wounds or scabs in the surgical area, please contact the hospital. This can increase the risk of infection, and the operation may need to be postponed. Remove jewellery, rings and piercings at home to reduce the risk of infection and burns. Remove nail polish. Wear comfortable clothing.

Other important information:

  • For safety reasons, you cannot drive after the operation. Please arrange for someone to collect you or use public transport.
  • If there is no public transport on the route you need to travel, call 05515 for assistance.
  • If you are unable to use public transport for health reasons, contact the department treating you well in advance of your scheduled treatment time.

  • After the operation, you must be supervised on the first evening/night. Please arrange for family or friends to stay in the same home as you.

  • Children may have only one parent accompany them into the recovery room.

  • If you need a sick note, this will be arranged before you go home.

  • Bring crutches if you have them and they are relevant to your operation.

Most of the inpatient wards in Kristiansand have a small collection of books that patients and their next of kin can borrow. Contact your department for further information and assistance.

Many people wish to bring flowers when visiting a patient in hospital, but due to allergies and the risk of infection, several of our departments do not allow flowers. We appreciate it if you choose something other than flowers when bringing a gift for a patient.

Some patients are also allergic to perfume or perfumed creams. We ask that you bear this in mind.

Many patients and next of kin wish to take photos/videos or blog about their time in hospital. This is of course allowed, as long as you respect the privacy of other patients and staff.

Here are a few helpful tips for using social media if you are a patient or next of kin:

  • Respect others. You must have consent if you want to take photos or videos of patients or staff. All patients are entitled to privacy while in hospital.
  • Parents/guardians decide whether you may take photos of children or publish photos of their children online. Parents should act in the child’s best interests. Once the child has turned 12, their views must be given considerable weight. Once the child has turned 15, they decide for themselves whether they are comfortable being photographed and whether the photos may be published.
  • Remember that staff must also give their permission if you want to publish photos you have taken of them.
  • You should remove content you have posted if the person concerned asks you to. If someone has posted photos of you online without permission, you can ask them to delete them. If they do not listen, you can contact: www.slettmeg.no.

Audio recording
It is not illegal to record conversations in which you yourself participate for private use. However, publishing and sharing recordings requires the consent of the person you are speaking with. Secretly recording conversations in which you do not participate is illegal.

Our hairdresser is located on the third floor of the hospital’s main building and is open to everyone. If needed, the hairdresser can come to the ward. The hairdresser also fits wigs. Opening hours are Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 09:00 to 16:00.

Have you worked in healthcare or received healthcare outside the Nordic countries during the past year?

This may include, for example, a hospital admission, extensive outpatient treatment or a visit to the dentist. In that case, your GP must test you for bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics (such as MRSA).

Ask your GP to send you the test results before your appointment with us, and bring them with you when you come to the hospital.

Sometimes we need a room for rest and reflection. We have three such rooms available for you and your loved ones. The rooms are open to everyone, regardless of faith or beliefs.

In Arendal, the hospital’s quiet room/chapel is on the basement floor of the main building. In Kristiansand, the room is on the ground floor of the main building, north entrance. Both rooms are open 24 hours a day. In Flekkefjord, the chapel is by the car park to the left of the main entrance.

It is also possible to hold a memorial service in the chapel in the event of a death. To arrange this, contact the hospital chaplains.

Eg Church in Kristiansand is open every weekday from 08:00 to 18:00 for anyone who would like a room for quiet and reflection. Open from 10:00 to 18:00 on weekends.

You will find the kiosk on the ground floor in the main building’s lobby at Eg.

The kiosk sells newspapers, magazines, fruit, chocolate, biscuits, ice cream, soft drinks, flowers, cards and various gifts, among other things.

Cafeteria
The “Kilden” cafeteria is located next to the kiosk and has the same opening hours.

The cafeteria serves rolls, baguettes, salads, cakes, hamburgers and hot dogs, among other things.

Parking at Sørlandet Hospital is subject to a fee Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 20:00. Anyone wishing to park on hospital grounds must follow the signs and instructions on the payment machines.

At the hospitals in Arendal and Kristiansand, you can pay for parking with EasyPark (mobile app) or by card at other locations. Check the signs for payment options and time limits.

At the hospital in Arendal, cameras read vehicle registration numbers as vehicles enter and leave the parking garage through the Autopay service. Follow the signs and instructions.

Pay at the payment machine

If you have not created a profile onAutopay.io​, you can pay at the machine by the main entrance. Enter the vehicle’s registration number. You can pay by card.

Pay automatically

Register as a customer with your vehicle registration number and bank card at www.autopay.io. Once registered, you will be charged automatically each time you park in the parking garage.

At certain times, for example when there is a lot of snow, it can be difficult to find a parking space. We therefore recommend allowing plenty of time.

For electric vehicles:

Electric vehicles are charged a parking fee from the first hour.

Need to charge your car? Not all our hospital sites have charging stations, and those that do have a limited number. You should therefore not rely on being able to charge your car while you are inside as a patient or visitor. You can find all charging stations here:

Parents/guardians of children (under 18) who are staying in hospital for more than 14 dayscan park for free for the remainder of the child’s stay. This also applies if the child’s stay began at another hospital. Contact the hospital department for more information.

A valid disabled parking permit entitles you to free parking in designated spaces
Contact the Service Desk to register your disabled parking permit. Vehicles displaying a disabled parking permit are exempt from time limits unless otherwise stated on the sign.

Parking for expectant mothers in Kristiansand
Expectant mothers can park free of charge outside the Women’s Department at the hospital in Kristiansand. The maximum parking time is 2 hours.

The Service Desk in Kristiansand is located right by the main entrance. You can contact the desk with questions about your appointment at the hospital.

Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays: 08:00-21:00.
