The Regional Centre of Expertise for Children with Prenatal Substance Exposure works for and with children exposed to alcohol or other drugs during pregnancy. Exposure to alcohol and/or illicit drugs during pregnancy is a risk factor for later difficulties with regulation, for example in relation to behaviour, emotions and sleep. This issue is also relevant to children with other neurodevelopmental disorders, such as ADHD and autism spectrum disorders. Knowledge about difficulties with attention and executive functions (“the brain’s captain”) is useful when seeking to understand and plan interventions, regardless of diagnosis. The interventions discussed in the course are aimed at the child’s symptoms, regardless of diagnosis.
The purpose of the course is to provide insight into recent research and experience-based knowledge about interventions that may be useful for children who struggle with attention/executive functions in kindergarten, at school and at home.
The speakers: Gro CC Løhaugen will have the academic responsibility for the day.
There is little research, both nationally and internationally, on effective and appropriate interventions specifically for children with FASD. No evidence-based interventions are available. However, several studies support the use of psychoeducation. Over the years, the Regional Centre of Expertise and HABU Arendal have acquired experience-based expertise, which is shared in relevant courses.
• General principles for intervention planning
• Regulation difficulties – what are they and how can we help?
• Attention and executive functions – how can we understand and accommodate?
• Behavioural difficulties – assessment and proposed interventions
