The Regional Competence Service for Children with Prenatal Substance Exposure works for and with children exposed to alcohol or other substances during pregnancy. Exposure to alcohol and/or illicit drugs during pregnancy is a risk factor for later difficulties with regulation, for example in relation to behaviour, emotions and sleep. This issue is also relevant to children with other neurodevelopmental disorders, such as ADHD and autism spectrum disorders. Knowledge of difficulties with attention and executive functions (“the brain’s captain”) is useful when trying to understand and plan interventions, regardless of diagnosis. The interventions discussed in the course target the child’s symptoms, regardless of diagnosis.

The purpose of the course is to provide insight into recent research and experience-based knowledge about interventions that may be useful for children who struggle with attention/executive functions, both in kindergarten and at school and home.
Speaker: Gro CC Løhaugen will be responsible for the academic content of the day.
There is little research, nationally or internationally, on effective and beneficial interventions specifically for children with FASD. No evidence-based interventions are available. However, several studies support the use of psychoeducation. Over the years, the Regional Competence Service and HABU Arendal have acquired experience-based expertise, which is shared in relevant courses.

• General principles for planning interventions
• Regulation difficulties – what are they and how can we help?
• Attention and executive functions – how to understand and make accommodations?
• Behavioural difficulties – assessment and proposed interventions
