Regional competence service for children with congenital fetal alcohol spectrum disorder works for and with children exposed to alcohol or other drugs during pregnancy. Exposure to alcohol and/or illegal drugs during pregnancy represents a risk factor for later difficulties with regulation, for example in relation to behavior, emotions and sleep. The issue is also relevant for children with other neurodevelopmental disorders such as ADHD and autism spectrum disorders. Knowledge of difficulties with attention and executive functions ("the brain's captain") is useful when considering and planning interventions, regardless of diagnosis. The interventions discussed in the course are aimed at the symptoms the child has, regardless of diagnosis.
The purpose of the course is to provide insight into recent research and experience-based knowledge about which interventions can be useful for children who struggle with attention/executive functions both in kindergarten, at school and at home.
The lecturer: Gro CC Løhaugen will have overall responsibility for the day.
There is little research both nationally and internationally on what effective and good interventions are specifically for children with FASD. Evidence-based interventions do not exist. However, there are several studies that support the use of psychoeducation. Regional Competence Service and HABU Arendal have over the years acquired experience-based expertise which is shared in current courses.
• Overall principles for intervention planning
• Regulation difficulties – what are these and how to help?
• Attention and executive functions – how to understand and accommodate?
• Behavioral difficulties – mapping and intervention proposals
